Soft Enamel vs. Hard Enamel Challenge Coins: How to Choose

Published by Torven Custom Gifts

Soft enamel challenge coins typically have raised metal outlines with color sitting below them, creating a textured surface. Hard enamel coins are finished with the color and surrounding metal flush for a smoother face. Choose the surface you want, then confirm that the artwork, metal finish and production process can achieve it.

What Is The Main Difference You Can Feel?

Soft enamel leaves a change in height between the metal outlines and the colored areas. Hard enamel aims for a level surface across those areas. The word “soft” describes the style of color filling; it does not mean the finished coin should feel rubbery. A screen rendering cannot reliably show the difference in touch. Ask for an identified physical reference if surface feel matters.

Which Should You Choose For Your Design?

Start with one priority: do you want to feel the metal boundaries, or do you want a smoother face? Use that preference to begin the comparison. A team emblem, commemorative inscription or recognition design still needs an artwork review in either process. Neither label alone guarantees that your smallest details will reproduce well.

Will Small Lettering And Logo Details Remain Clear?

Review the proof at the intended physical size. Identify the smallest letters, the narrowest metal lines and any tiny areas that need color. Ask which details must be enlarged, simplified or moved to the reverse for the proposed process. Do not approve lettering only because it looks sharp in a magnified digital image. Keep the exact wording in a separate proofreading checklist.

Is Enamel The Same Decision As 2d Or 3d Relief?

No. Enamel describes a color treatment, while relief describes the shape of the metal surface. Specify both instead of using one term as a substitute for the other. If your design includes a sculpted portrait or another raised subject, mark where color is wanted and where metal should remain exposed. Ask for a process-specific review of that combination rather than assuming every finish can be applied to every area.

Can You Combine Enamel With An Antique Or Polished Finish?

Describe the desired metal appearance separately from the color treatment. Mark the finish for the front, reverse and edge, and identify any areas that need a different treatment. Ask which combinations are feasible for the proposed construction and request a relevant reference. A photo of a gold-colored coin does not establish its base material, plating specification or enamel process.

Which Option Costs Less Or Lasts Longer?

Ask for two written options using the same artwork, quantity, dimensions, finish, packaging and destination. Confirm any changes to setup, samples or production steps. A general comparison cannot set your final price or delivery schedule. For durability, explain whether the coins will be carried, traded or displayed, then ask about suitable handling and packaging. Do not treat either enamel name as a scratch-proof guarantee.

What Should You Check Before Approving The Coin?

Confirm both sides, spelling, dimensions, thickness, color references, metal finish, edge and packaging together. Identify whether the reference being reviewed is a digital rendering or a physical sample. If a sample is part of the order, agree on what it approves and how a difference from the approved specification will be reviewed. Keep the final artwork and written scope under the same revision reference.

WHAT SHOULD YOU SEND TO Torven Custom Gifts?

Use the contact form to share your quantity, front and reverse references, overall dimensions, desired surface feel, finish, packaging, destination and required in-hand date. If you are undecided, ask to compare a textured option and a smooth option for the same design. Final feasibility, pricing and production arrangements require a project-specific confirmation. The size, relief and quote-checklist guides below can help you prepare the brief.
